What Is a Smear Test?
A smear test involves examining cell samples taken from the cervix using a special brush under a microscope. Through these cells, the following can be detected at an early stage:
- Risk of cervical cancer
- Presence of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
- Cellular changes (dysplasia)
How Is the Test Performed?
During the test, the patient is positioned on a gynecological examination table. A sample is taken from the cervix through the vagina using a special brush. The procedure:
- Is painless (some women may feel mild discomfort or stinging)
- Takes approximately 1–2 minutes
- Does not require anesthesia or numbing
When Should It Be Done?
The smear test is recommended for every woman who has started sexual activity, starting from the age of 21.
- Ages 21–30: Smear test every 3 years
- Ages 30 and over: Smear + HPV test combination every 5 years
- More frequently: In women with a history of abnormal smear results or HPV positivity
Things to Consider Before the Test
- No sexual intercourse for 48 hours before the test
- No vaginal douching, creams, or medications should be used
- The test should not be done during menstruation (the ideal time is a few days after the period ends)
Why Is the Smear Test Important?
Cervical cancer may not show any symptoms in its early stages. With a smear test:
- Cellular changes that may turn into cancer can be detected early
- HPV infection can be identified
- A simple test can save lives
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the smear test as a fundamental screening tool in women’s health.
What Is the Difference Between a Smear Test and an HPV Test?
Unlike the smear test, the HPV test directly detects the presence of the virus. It is generally recommended to be performed together with the smear test in women aged 30 and over.
