What Is an Intrauterine Device (IUD)?
An IUD is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device placed inside the uterus. It is known as “IUD” (Intrauterine Device) in English and also referred to as “RİA” in Turkish.
There are two main types of IUDs:
- Hormonal IUD: Releases a low dose of hormone into the uterus, prevents pregnancy, and may reduce menstrual bleeding in some women.
- Copper IUD: Hormone-free. Prevents pregnancy by releasing copper ions that interfere with sperm movement and fertilization.
How Is an IUD Inserted?
An IUD is inserted into the uterus during a gynecological examination. The procedure is usually quick and does not require anesthesia. Mild cramping or discomfort may be felt during insertion.
Ideal timing: An IUD is typically inserted during the last days of menstruation or shortly after it ends. During this time, the cervix is slightly more open, making the procedure more comfortable.
Who Is an IUD Suitable For?
An IUD is ideal for women who want long-term contraception and prefer not to use daily methods such as birth control pills. It is also suitable for:
- Women who have given birth or have not given birth
- Those who do not want to use hormonal methods (copper IUD)
- Women who may forget daily contraception
- Those seeking long-term pregnancy prevention (5–10 years)
What Are the Advantages of an IUD?
- Provides effective protection for 5 to 10 years
- Hormonal IUDs may reduce menstrual pain and heavy bleeding
- Reversible method (fertility returns after removal)
- Does not require daily use
- Can be safely used during breastfeeding
What Should Be Considered After IUD Insertion?
- Mild cramping and spotting may occur in the first few days
- If pain after intercourse, fever, or foul-smelling discharge occurs within the first month, consult your doctor immediately
- A follow-up appointment is recommended after 1 month to check proper placement
- Annual gynecological examinations are advised
Is IUD Insertion Painful?
Mild cramping similar to menstrual pain may be felt during IUD insertion. While some women feel little to no discomfort, others may experience short-term pain.
If necessary, pain relief medication may be recommended before the procedure.
When Can an IUD Be Removed?
An IUD can be removed at any time upon request. Fertility returns immediately after removal. If pregnancy is desired, contraception ends once the IUD is taken out.
